April 30, 2023 - Reddit saved the day - but this is how we're handling 1,000 Marketing Admin applicants and surviving the chaos...
Hey there, job hunters and HR enthusiasts! We're currently in the midst of a challenge that we just had to share with you. We've been trying to fill a Marketing Admin role, and let's just say, it's been quite the adventure so far.
We initially struggled to attract a sufficient number of applicants through traditional job advertising channels, but then we had a stroke of genius - why not try advertising on Reddit? We posted the job opening on the popular social media platform, and to our amazement, we received over 1,000 applications in just a few days! It was a real game-changer, and we were thrilled with the response.
But as with all good things, there's a catch - we quickly realised that handling such a high volume of applications was no walk in the park. It's been a whirlwind, to say the least. We're a bit overwhelmed, but also incredibly grateful for the response we've received.
We're currently in the thick of it, sifting through CVs, conducting interviews, and trying our best to provide feedback to every applicant. It's definitely slowed down the process, but we're committed to providing a positive candidate experience, and that includes providing feedback to each and every person who applied.
We've learned some valuable lessons from this experience so far. Firstly, we've realised that being open-minded and thinking outside the box when it comes to job advertising can pay off in a big way. Secondly, we've learned that being prepared for a high volume of applications is crucial, and it's important to have a streamlined process in place for handling them. Finally, we've learned that clear and transparent communication with candidates is key to maintaining a positive candidate experience.

Losing a loved one is never easy, and when it comes time to say goodbye, it can be one of the most difficult things we ever have to do. But when we are asked to write a eulogy, it can be even more daunting. Writing a eulogy is a way to honor and celebrate the life of someone we loved, but it can also feel like an enormous responsibility, and the fear of not doing the person justice can be overwhelming.
A few weeks ago, a client approached us with just such a request. He had lost someone very dear to him, and he knew what he wanted to say, but he simply didn't know how to say it. He was too scared to put pen to paper, too overcome by his grief to find the right words.
We sat down with him and began to talk about his loved one, about the memories they shared together, and about the faith they both held dear. As we listened to him, we began to understand what he was feeling, and we were able to help him find the words he needed to express his love and his sorrow.
Together, we crafted a eulogy that was heartwarming, endearing, and fitting. It spoke to the life of the person he had lost, to the memories they shared, and to the love that would endure beyond death. It was a tribute that would do justice to the person he loved so much.
The day of the funeral arrived, and our client was understandably nervous. He had spoken in his church many times before, but this was different. Hey there! Let's talk about desks - specifically, personalization vs. a clean desk policy. Here at Aurora Assist, we're big fans of having a personalized workspace. Of course, when it comes to client information, we still keep things clean and organized. But that doesn't mean we can't have a little personality in our workspace!
Personally, I find it really important to have a workspace that reflects my personality and tastes. If I see a workspace that's totally sterile and impersonal, it just makes me wonder if that person is really committed to their job, be that working for us at Aurora Assist or if I am meeting with suppliers and contractors. I feel that having a personalized workspace shows that you care about your job and are invested in what you're doing.
Of course, there are pros and cons to both sides. A clean desk policy can definitely improve security and productivity, but it can also stifle creativity and make people feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, personalizing your workspace in our experience improves job satisfaction and creativity, although we do admit it can also lead to distractions and clutter.
At Aurora Assist, we've found that the best approach is to find a balance between the two. We keep our client information organized and secure, but we also allow ourselves to add a little bit of personalization to our workspace. It can be as simple as adding a plant or some photos, or as elaborate as a full-on desk makeover. We’ve noticed different members of our team like different aesthetics. One staff member loves all things pink; lots of pastels with their highlighters and post-it notes, pens and everything besides =) Another staff member much prefers red and black as an aesthetic, not in a gothic way but for her red is her ‘power color’ and she likes the offset of it against the color black.
At the end of the day, we're all unique individuals with our own personalities and tastes. So why not let that shine through in our workspace? We spend so much time at our desks these days, especially with remote work now, that it really can make a big difference in our attitude towards work and our overall job satisfaction.

April 12, 2023 - Lost in Translation: The Fine Line between Clarity and Expertise in Communication.
Effective communication is a cornerstone of success in both personal and professional relationships. However, despite our best intentions, it's easy for misunderstandings to occur, particularly in our fast-paced, digital age. As someone who regularly provides legal advice and support, I've recently experienced firsthand how even the best efforts to communicate can be misinterpreted by others. In this article, I'll share my reflections on this experience and offer some practical tips for communicating more effectively, whether you're providing legal advice or communicating in other contexts.
I recently had an experience that perfectly illustrates this point. I answered two separate legal questions on one of the public forums. The first time I provided an answer, a third party accused me of using AI to generate the answer which I hadn’t. I just wrote it a little too formally. Subsequently, and with this in the back of my head, I answered a separate question using Plain English (on our website we have some more information about the Plain English campaign and it’s something we, as a business, strive to use when possible). A separate third party criticized me for not using technical legal jargon, suggesting that I didn't know what I was talking about.
It's a tough balancing act, right? On one hand, we want to use language that is clear and easy to understand and accessible to all, especially when we're communicating with people who may not be familiar with technical jargon. On the other hand, we also want to be taken seriously and avoid being accused of not knowing what we're talking about.
So, in consideration of this particular learning experience I was thinking about some ways to communicate more effectively and it’s something that I’ll be making sure I personally as well as my team consider in the future.
Be clear and concise: Avoid using overly complex language or technical terminology unless it is absolutely necessary. Instead, focus on communicating your message clearly and concisely.
Use examples: Where possible, use examples and analogies to illustrate your point. This can help to make your message more concrete and easier to understand.
Consider your audience: Think about who you are communicating with and tailor your language and approach accordingly. If you are communicating with a general audience, use plain English and avoid technical jargon. If you are communicating with experts in a particular field, it may be appropriate to use more technical language.
Be patient: Remember that misunderstandings can arise even when we try our best to communicate clearly. If someone misunderstands your message, take the time to clarify and explain it in a different way.
It’s just very frustrating that, even when offering assistance free of charge there are still people who are critical of it. It reminds me of my early days with my training contract, being a little terrified and somewhat in awe of the two equity partners, one in particular was a decade or so past retirement then and is still practising. He has a certain aura about him that is both a grand-dad but also a fierce bulldog at the same time. It’s an odd combination to describe. The other was somewhat younger but practiced commercial litigation and had a fearsome reputation not only in the firm but in the local legal community. Suffice it to that in those early days what either of them said really was law. And now I’m left, despite now having my own firm, feeling like I’m back in those old days of intense scrutiny.
It’s the second thing recently that is giving me pause for thought on whether we will continue pro-bono work. Or, if we do, we may only continue it with offering free service to our new and existing clients without any expectation from them of us doing the same.

As the CEO of Aurora Assist, I know firsthand how important it is to have a team of skilled and dedicated staff. However, in recent years, it's become increasingly difficult to find and attract top talent.
While the COVID-19 epidemic undoubtedly had an impact on the labor market, other long-term developments that have added to this difficulty include the rise of remote work and the rising acceptance of remote jobs. Since Aurora Assist has always engaged in remote work, we have firsthand knowledge of how fiercely competitive hiring has become as more businesses adopt this style of working.
Companies are no longer restricted to employing inside their local area due to the rise in remote employment. In order to recruit great people, even tiny businesses like Aurora Assist must increasingly compete with giant corporations. The talent pool has also grown more diversified and dispersed as more people choose remote work as a lifestyle option, making it harder to find and recruit the best applicants.
In my experience, there are several key factors that make it particularly difficult to find great staff in 2023:

We're not the type of law firm that will simply act on every demand from a client with no other concern than their invoice. We want to make sure that we're providing advice that is in the best interest of our clients and will lead to positive outcomes for them.

April 2, 2023 - CEO Leads the Charge: How Our Business Pivoted to Community Service During COVID-19
Our business understood the need for neighborhood assistance during the COVID-19 outbreak and the ensuing lockdown, and we urged our staff to participate in community service projects. Many of our team members volunteered to assist in any way they could, even though some of them were unable to due to health issues.
Even our CEO set an excellent example by helping out at the neighborhood food bank and distributing care packages containing food and essentials. Her efforts included gathering and distributing hygiene supplies and food for animals, as well as gathering food from nearby stores and other organizations to donate to the foodbank.
During her volunteer work, our CEO encountered a gentleman who challenged the quantity of toilet paper given out by the project. She was not aware of the issue as she did not personally package the items, but she took it upon herself to supplement the project's supply with her own resources. Now that more and more people are working from home, including members of staff from Aurora Assist, it has become super important to recognize the issues surrounding correct posture when at your desk. Making sure that you have the correct equipment, the right type of seating, that the screen is at the correct height etc. In our homes we don't have any health and safety co-ordinators to check on us and ensure that we are practicing proper ergonomics at our desk. I'm sure some people will perhaps sink onto their sofas, or maybe sit outside on their decks or in the garden, balancing a laptop on their laps. And maybe that's okay for a few minutes at a time but should NEVER be their regular habits. Please if you're doing that, stop and think of your back, eyesight and hands.

Aurora Assist had an initial vision when we first started business, to empower women with caring roles and it is something we care passionately about. Too many women are kept back by their caring responsibilities - either due to childcare or elder care. Why women? Because that's still what our society believes is 'correct'. Things are slowly changing but in the main it is still daughter's and mom's who are responsible for giving up their careers in order to care for family.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Companies can empower women with caregiving responsibilities to still use their skills and further their career by offering flexible work arrangements, such as job-sharing, remote working, and part-time positions.
We have found that by providing women with dedicated mentors we can help empower them to pursue leadership and professional development opportunities. We would encourage other companies to do the same. We have also been able to offer financial aid and other benefits such as childcare and parental leave to our staff, and while this may not be possible for all employers we would encourage any business to explore similar investment in their staff.
While this obviously allows women to take care of their family and still follow their career aspirations, it also has exponential benefits to the employer too.
